Visit to the Nene Valley Railway, 3 October
2009
This year marks the 20th anniversary of 'The Miracle' album
- in which connection the video for the song 'Breakthru' was made at the Nene
Valley Railway, a private steam line in Cambridgeshire. We took a ride along the
line - through the (only) tunnel (of polystyrene bricks fame, as far as the
video is concerned) to Yarwell Junction and back again down the line to
Peterborough. After some inquiries about the couple of days Queen spent filming
up here, we were given some information: That the local newspaper reported that
'Queen' was coming and people were expecting THE Queen. But some fans clearly
knew who was there, as, we were told, as they lurked at the level crossing
hoping to get some chips off the flat bed carriage used by the group attached to
the engine. (Certainly, we felt, Freddie's acrobatics would have breached
current Health and Safety Regulations!) The steam engine itself, dubbed 'The
Miracle Express', was a Great Western engine on loan - it didn't belong to the
railway itself. We were also told that Brian became a member of the railway
after his visit, and there might even still be some lights left in the tunnel
that were placed there for the occasion! Here are a couple of pictures:
