by Brian May (1977)
Buddy

Playin' in the street gonna be a big man some day
You got mud on yo' face
You

Kickin' your can all over the place
Singin'
We will we will rock you
We will we will rock you
Buddy you're a young man hard man
Shouting in the street gonna take on the world some day
You got blood on yo' face
You big disgrace
Wavin' your banner all over the place
We will we will rock you
Sing it
We will we will rock you
Buddy you're an old man poor man
Pleadin' with your eyes gonna make
You some peace some day
You got mud on your face
Big disgrace
Somebody betta put you back into your place
We will we will rock you
Sing it
We will we will rock you
Everybody
We will we will rock you
We will we will rock you

IT'S
LATE
by
Brian May
(Scene
1)
You
say
you
lovE
me
AND
I hardly
know
your
name
AND
If i say
i love
you in the candlelight
there's
no-one but
myself
to blame

But
there's something inside

Woh - how I could
love you
If I could let you
stay
and
I'm bleeding deep inside

though
I'm crying I can't help but hear you say
It's
late - It's late - It's late
But
not too late
(Scene
2)
the
way
you
lovE
me
is
the
sweetest love
around
but
after all
this
time
the
more i'm
trying

Oh,
you know that I can love you
Though I know I can't be true
Oh,
you made me love you
Don't tell me that we're through
and
it's driving me so mad
yes
I know, but don't try and tell me that it's
save
our love you can't
turn out the light
It's
late - It's late - It's late
But not too late
-
I've
been so long
- You've been so long
- We've been so long tryin' to work it out ?
+
- I ain't got long
- You ain't got long
- We've gotta know what this life's all about, ooh
- Tell me
÷ ?
- Tryin' to work it out, yeah, ooh
Too
late, yeah, too late, much too late
(Scene
3)
You're
staring at me
With suspicion in your eye
You
say what game are you playing?
What's
this that you're saying?
I
know that I can't reply
If
I take you tonight
Is
it making my life a lie?
?????????????????
???????????????
Oh
you make me wonder
Did
I live my life right?
Yes
I know, but there's no way it has to be

so
let
the
fire take our bodies this night

let
the waters take our guilt in the tide
Oh, It's all too late

Hearing
the call many years away
From
a royal rooftop I was summoned
A
Sweet Sister who had sailed away;
Though
for Song ’39 I had volunteered;
A
raw recruit professing to the Opera
Those
dreams
of youth then disappeared;
They’re
these same dreams now fulfilled.

dry-lipped from a

Speaking
for our eternal destiny at one.

Since early 2005, I have been translating a number of
items from German into English for Brian's official website. The above
picture was sent to me by e-mail during the Queen and Paul Rodgers
European tour later that year, with a note from Brian saying he loved
it. In December 2006, I finally got to meet Brian - twice. The first
time was at the Zurich premiere of the musical
and I believe he had not realised who I was. I made it clear we had
never met, yet he proceeded to volunteer a piece of information, full of
meaning, looking straight into my eyes as he did so, so intensely that
I had the feeling he was intending to land a space probe on the surface
of my soul. What he said, and the way he said it, convinced me more than
ever of the common ground between us; the untold pain we had both
suffered through the early loss of someone whom we loved and was
irreplaceable, and the mission to keep that person's spirit alive.
In the book 'Bang! The Complete History of the
Universe', which Brian co-wrote with two other astronomers, a lot is
written about time in the context of the universe. I've been interested
in seeing how these universal truths may relate to our everyday
experiences, and think that maybe, emotionally, some events, like that
meeting, happen outside time because there is no explaining them. Then
again, I
suppose that an encounter with Brian was never going to yield a chat
about the weather! The words he spoke were uncannily relevant, and,
after all, this story has been all about words - Freddie's words in
'Bohemian Rhapsody', Brian's in 'Some Day, One Day' and 'The Prophet's
Song', to cite just three examples, as well as all of my words -
everything I've written as well as the words I have offered in the
translations - and here a few more from Brian as well:
Write your
letters in the sand
For the day
I take your hand
In the land
that our grandchildren knew
Brian May, ''39'
"You get around, don't you?" commented Brian
the second time we met - the same week, he was back in London signing
copies of the 'Bang!' book, and I went along - this time I managed to
talk with him about the Zurich premiere and to tell him that I was his
website's translator of all things Teutonic! "Oh that's you!",
he replied, and seemed really pleased to meet me and made me feel that
it was I who was the star! Afterwards I thought about his words,
"get around" - hmm...we were in the City of London - within
the Roman one square mile where I had been to school.
I don't want to dwell on another geographical connection with the past,
but just to mention it in the context of 'Bang!''s study of the
universe, where time and distance are interconnected in a way that we
don't sense on earth, as the light from the stars we observe has to
travel from the past because of the distances involved. So, in that
sense, yes, "get around" I had, from 30 years before, to find
that the words of the song ''39', which had been so much a part of my
teenage world, and which Brian had written with the idea of 'spacetime'
relativity in mind, had now become a reality. In the end, it was the
non-verbal communication that proves the most poignant. I'm only reading
into it what I understand - and that's a friendship that has transcended
time - through the Queen songs that, one way or another, have punctuated
my life over the years, even when I have not been conscious of it. The
other idea behind ''39', therefore, that of an emotional journey - you
"get around" and, one day, you land...and, on that afternoon,
I was not able to stop smiling!
In a
different place
Way 'cross
Time and Space
The door is
open wide
Drawn to a
different light
Maybe we'll
step inside
In Another
World
We can show
we care
You can be
sure I'm waiting there -
In Another
World...
You can
believe I'll meet you here
In Another
World
Brian May, 'Another World'

Awaking
from a dream, the whole of me
Met
with the whole of you. In the silence
Not
one word was left unspoken. We didn't
See
eye to eye on everything
But
in everything we are face to face.
Now nothing can ever part us....

words, written in 2004 on returning to the music of Queen - more here).
